Nefta is a city of Tunisia, in the Tunisian Sahara. It is noted for the mosque at the head of its oasis. It is located in west-central Tunisia in the southwest of Tozeur Governorate, near the Algerian border. Its principal economic activity is date farming. Established as a Roman outpost in 100 BC, Nefta has been significant since antiquity due to its location along trans-Saharan trade routes and its proximity to salt mines. The town became Islamicized following the Muslim conquest of North Africa and later served as a key caravan terminus on the trans-Saharan route during medieval times. Today it remains an important administrative center.
