El Jem is a city in northern Tunisia. It’s known for the huge, well-preserved Roman Amphitheatre of El Jem, with underground passageways and seating for 35,000 people. It's possible to climb to the upper levels of the brick building and look out over the surrounding countryside. In the center of town, the tall minaret of Sidi Ahmed Mosque overlooks the partially ruined medina. Other notable attractions in El Jem include its majestic aqueducts and museums displaying mosaics and artifacts from ancient Thysdrus.
