The Ait Youcef District takes its name from the city of Aït Yous (Aït Youcef in French and sometimes misspelled as Aït Oussif or Aït Ouissif, meaning populated by the Oussawa Berbers). The city itself is located on a hilltop at an elevation of 1,180 feet/360 meters above sea level overlooking the coastal plains, and is surrounded by olive trees. The Royal Palace is located here in an area known as "Folk city."
